Following our managing director from the very beginning, Paul Wimmer, today we feature a man who has been on board for almost 30 years: Dr. Torsten Zurmühl. His career path from administrator to managing director exemplifies the development of our group and the role of IT as our strategic core.

An “exotic” specialist finds his home

When Torsten Zurmühl joined AGROLAB in 1997, he brought with him a degree that was still considered exotic at the time: geoecology. Educated in Bayreuth, his focus was on the interface between natural sciences and data. At AGROLAB, he started as a specialist for a state-of-the-art project on digital data processing in agriculture.

It quickly became clear that his understanding of complex data structures was exactly what the growing company needed. Torsten Zurmühl stayed and grew with the group. He took over the management of IT and was appointed to the management board over ten years ago.

“I never felt the need to change companies. Over the decades, AGROLAB has repeatedly offered me new roles and challenges, into which I have gradually grown.” (Dr. Torsten Zurmühl)

For us, IT is not a tool, but the product

A decisive milestone under his leadership was the consistent development of our proprietary software solutions. While many competitors rely on off-the-shelf software, AGROLAB develops its systems largely in-house. For Torsten Zurmühl, this is not an end in itself, but the very foundation of our industrial analytics.

Through this IT sovereignty, we ensure that a soil value in Kiel is processed according to the exact same digital standards as a water sample in Italy. It is this stability and process reliability that sets us apart in Europe today.

“We communicate with our customers on an equal footing and rely on direct, short decision-making paths. This is the typical AGROLAB straightforwardness that our customers have valued for decades.” (Dr. Torsten Zurmühl)

Sustainability: actions instead of marketing slogans

In addition to IT and agricultural laboratories, Torsten Zurmühl is now also responsible for overall quality management, which includes sustainability. In this area, he follows the same pragmatic approach that characterises the entire AGROLAB GROUP. Instead of relying on elaborate advertising campaigns, he focuses on measurable facts: photovoltaic systems on laboratory roofs, optimised recycling of laboratory waste, and the gradual reduction of our CO₂ footprint.

The guiding principle is clear: we only talk about achievements once they have actually been implemented. This focus on integrity and modesty is, for him, inseparably linked to the company’s history.

The bridge to the future

Today, Torsten Zurmühl not only heads IT but also our agricultural laboratories – the very area where it all began 40 years ago. For him, this brings things full circle.

“We are growing step by step while remaining true to our core values. We are reducing our ecological footprint not because a law requires us to, but because we want to out of our own conviction.” (Dr. Torsten Zurmühl)[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row”][vc_column][eud_button button_text=”back to overview” link=”/blog/” button_pos=”eud_button_right” button_size=”eud_button_medium” use_icon=”yes” icon_animation=”hover” el_class=”marg_b30 marg_t10″ icon=”fa-rightarrow-tail”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

For us, IT is not just a tool, but the foundation for industrial analytics across Europe.
